The Way of Kenosis: Following the Self-Emptying King

Delivered by: Pastor Jesse
Date: August 24, 2025
Length: 26:49 min

Will You Embrace God’s Covenant by Emptying Yourself to Join in His Renewal?

In 1 Peter 2:9–10, we are called a “chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation” who declare God’s praises and embody His kingdom. Pastor Jesse shows how our identity flows from Jesus, the self-emptying King of Philippians 2:5–11, whose way of kenosis—laying aside power and privilege to serve in love—sets the pattern for us as His people.

Through God’s covenant, we are invited to join in His renewal of all things by adopting a kenotic posture. This calling is not about privilege but purpose, as we bear witness to God’s restoring work through lives marked by generosity, hospitality, peace, and self-giving love.

The following video is meant to be watched at the point in the sermon when Pastor Jesse invites you to pause and view The Bible Project’s teaching on covenant.

1 Peter 2:9-10 (BSB)

9But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, to proclaim the virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. 10Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

The Mind of Christ

(Isaiah 52:13–15)

5Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus:

6Who, existing in the form of God,

did not consider equality with God

something to be grasped,

7but emptied Himself,

taking the form of a servant,

being made in human likeness.

8And being found in appearance as a man,

He humbled Himself

and became obedient to death—

even death on a cross.

9Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place

and gave Him the name above all names,

10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.
