As part of our new series The Church in God’s Story of Renewal, Pastor Jesse opened Mark 10:42–45 to remind us that Jesus redefined greatness: “the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve.” The church, shaped by the self-giving love of the Trinity and the Kingdom, is called to live as a servant people—bearing one another’s burdens, sharing life in true koinonia, and orienting everything around God’s promises rather than the world’s.

42So Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their superiors exercise authority over them. 43But it shall not be this way among you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44and whoever wants to be first must be the slave of all. 45For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

Sharing among Believers
(Acts 2:42–47)
32The multitude of believers was one in heart and soul. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they owned. 33With great power the apostles continued to give their testimony about the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And abundant grace was upon them all.
34There were no needy ones among them, because those who owned lands or houses would sell their property, bring the proceeds from the sales, 35and lay them at the apostles’ feet for distribution to anyone as he had need.
